Beijing:
Where Women Rule
If
there is one city truly celebrating International Women’s Day, it must be
Beijing. This city, has increasingly given many
opportunities for women to rule. Not in the sense of Empress Dowager, but
in a legitimate business sense. In this month’s
issue
of Metrozine we want to celebrate a new awareness of female power in China
and salute any woman who chooses the
road
less traveled.
As
Beijing celebrates Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements of two
extraordinary women: one an athlete, the other
an
artist. Both have turned their passions into successful business ventures.
They teach us that by doing what you love
doing
most, there is no limit to what you can achieve.
Ai Wan:
China’s Multi-Media Doll Makes Ideas a Big Business
Ai Wan,
charming yet confident, is truly one extraordinary woman. She is
multi-faceted and multi-talented. What makes
her
different from other jack-of-many-trades is that she achieves exceptional
results in the endeavors she pursues. Like
cream
when milk is churned, she always rises to the top.
Born in
Shanghai, she left China in 1987 to become one of the very few Asians to
have made genuine careers in Hollywood.
Despite
the promising career, an invitation to appear in a TV series in her homeland
and the opportunity it gave her to trace
her
roots enticed her to leave her comfort zone and brave a comeback in China.
In just
four years since her return to Beijing, Ai Wan has dabbled in many things.
She has acted in a TV series, written a
screenplay, produced a movie, walked the runway, hosted prominent events,
launched her own design company and opened
her own
club, on top of many other outstanding achievements. It would be a
gargantuan task to pinpoint what she can do
best, but one
thing is for sure - she is an artist in the true sense. An artist so
creative she can transcend any medium.
Of
late, Ai Wan has been kept busy with two of her passions, film and
clubbing. She is currently busy doing Phoenix
Brassiere, a black
comedy which she is producing, co-writing and starring in. Also very
recently, through her own design
company, sheopened
a new club, China Doll.
China
Doll is the first, and so far only, club by Ai Wan, considered by many as
Beijing’s club guru. AS a Modern Weekly
columnist, Ai Wan built a reputation as an expert on the scene, writing
about “the progressive party spirit and attitude”.
Proof
of her expertise in clubbing is that many Gongti Xilu Bars commissioned her
company, Epic Designs, to re-
conceptualize their
bars. None came to form though, as they found her ideas too radical, wild
and avant-garde for Beijing.
China
Doll is, hence, the fruition of the bursting ideas in her mind. Ai Wan
expounds, “The bar is inspired by a mother’s
womb.
It’s supposed to make you feel like you are under water. The club exudes a
positive energy as a whole rather than
just
the lights, which other bars in Gongti Xilu focus on. Because of this,
people can be their liberal and free selves.”
Judging from
the beautiful, fun-loving, jam-packed weekend crowds, it seems to be living
up to its expectations of being
Beijing’s next “it”
place.
On the
qualities that helped her succeed in her many undertakings, she says, “I
consider myself a fun, fearless, female.”
She believes
these traits are an ideal match for the inherent values of Chinese women.
“They should take on new
challenges, experience new things, always be curious to keep progressing and develop
their inner soul power.”
“After
all, success is all about self-challenge, it must come from within. If
women approach things fearlessly, they will
succeed.They
shouldn’t be afraid to fail, because they are bound to learn something from
it. Don’t pack your bags and leave
and take the
safe route.” Ai speaks from experience recalling a difficult period that
made her want to retreat.
In
closing, she encourages women to “just be yourselves, be beautiful. If we
can achieve this, we will have a happy life and
bring
happiness to the people around us. You have to find happiness yourself
first, you cannot rely on others. Find out who
you
are, then you can bring beauty to the world.” With such beauty inside-out,
no doubt, she knows what she’s saying.

Ai Wan: China’s Multi-Media Doll Makes Ideas a Big
Business
Epic
Design
Clubbing
Culture
